Patron Saints

I have had the best time learning all about our wonderful family of Catholic saints in Heaven since joining the fold.  I can never do anything halfway, so I have a gi-normous stack of catholic books,  a lovely album full of holy cards both new and vintage I have been collecting....

my holy card album

a lovely St Therese tote bag I received as a Christmas gift from my poor befuddled non-practicing Jewish hubby, whom I carefully took to the local Catholic Store, helpfully "suggested" a few things, and turned him loose......

Cute, huh?

And what I can clearly see is going to be my new obsession, an ETSY website devoted to the sale of the most adorable felt handmade saint dolls you ever saw!

This lady has EVERY saint doll you can imagine and then some.  I can't wait to order my patron, St Dymphna, and St Francis will be right behind her.

I love the idea of having a family in Heaven as well as here on earth, that is holding us up in prayer and helping us in our faith.

Anyone care to share who their favorite/patron saints are and why?

  1. St Peter. His Faith faltered many times. Like mine.

    God bless.

  2. Hi Victor--thanks! Yes, St Peter did falter, yet the Lord loved him dearly, forgave him, and even made him head of His Church! St. Peter is an easy man to like, and to identify with, it seems.

  3. New to your blog! A lot of my patrons revolve around Our Lady. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Mystical Rose and Our Lady of Guadalupe. My husband and I also have a strong devotion to St. Joseph. I also love St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Liseux, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Rita of Cascia, and Blessed Anna Maria Taigi just to name a few. I could go on and on about more saints but I will stop there :)

    1. Hi Kat--thanks for stopping by! I just love almost all the saints you mentioned--am not familiar with the last one but I will have to check her out. I love the film about St. Maria Goretti that plays often on EWTN--it is in Italian I believe but is dubbed into english. Have you seen it?

  4. Hi Kerry! One of the other candidates when I went through RCIA chose St. Dymphna. I had a very difficult time with mine, because I was torn between St. John the Apostle and St. Augustine. I ended up choosing St. Augustine because his pre-conversion struggles were so similar to my own. I also identified with his statement about "late have I loved thee, O beauty ever ancient." I always felt sad, though, that I wasn't able to choose St. John, so I guess I've reached a good compromise in having him as the patron saint for my blog. God bless you.

    1. Wow Scott, I never realized that lovely quote was from St Augustine! How neat! I can see why you chose him. I am also fond of St John the apostle, as the only apostle who stood by Jesus at the cross, with the Blessed Mother. I love the way he was portrayed in The Passion of The Christ, and that's how I think of him.

      Thanks!

  5. I found your blog through 7 Quick Takes. I, too, am 48 and a convert. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is my patronness. She was also a convert, a former Anglican. She had failures and setbacks and losses along the way, just as I have. St. Thomas More is another favorite of mine, and St. Margaret Clitherow. Looking forward to reading your blog!

    1. Hello Kate, and welcome! Thanks for stopping by. Our local hospital here is named for St. Elizabeth Seton, and run by the Daughters of Charity. And my church is St Thomas More, so I have learned lots about him. Have you seen "A Man for all Seasons"? It's a great older movie about St Thomas More. I admire him because not only was he faithful to the Lord to the very end, but he never lost his sense of humor and was cracking jokes all the way up the stairs to the beheading area. I can't wait to meet him in the hereafter--I bet he's a lot of fun!
